MoodConnect and UC Berkeley: Pioneering Sustainable SWAG for Healthier Workspaces

By Amy Ouzoonian

For Students at UC Berkeley and all future of work advocates sustainability and wellness are not just buzzwords but imperatives. MoodConnect has always been at the forefront of creating healthier workspaces. Our mission has always been clear: to enhance the mental and physical well-being of employees through innovative and thoughtful products. This mission led us to an exciting collaboration with the bright minds at UC Berkeley, a partnership that not only exemplified our commitment to sustainability and wellness but also taught us invaluable lessons in the realm of marketing and product development.

First and foremost, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the students and faculty at UC Berkeley. Their creativity, dedication, and innovative spirit have been instrumental in this journey, allowing us to explore new horizons in sustainable SWAG and office products. This collaboration was more than just a project; it was a shared vision of making the workplace a healthier, more sustainable environment.

The Genesis of a Sustainable Vision

Our journey began with a simple yet ambitious goal: to design new sustainable products that could be used as SWAG (Stuff We All Get) and office products. We wanted these products not just to be eco-friendly but also to embody MoodConnect's mission. UC Berkeley, with its emphasis on sustainability and innovation, was the perfect partner for this endeavor.

Lessons in Marketing and Product Development

Through this collaboration, we learned several key lessons in marketing and product development that I believe are invaluable for any organization looking to make a meaningful impact.

1. Budget for the Quantity and Quality of the Product

One of the first lessons we learned was the importance of budgeting for both the quantity and quality of the product. Sustainable materials and processes can often come with a higher price tag, but investing in quality is investing in the message you want to send to your customers and employees. This investment also speaks volumes about your company's commitment to sustainability and wellness. It was crucial for us to find a balance that allowed us to produce enough units to make a significant impact while ensuring that each product met our high standards of quality and sustainability.

2. Create a Product That Has Dual Uses

Innovation was at the heart of our design process, leading us to the second lesson: the power of dual-use products. The UC Berkeley team helped us conceptualize products that were not only sustainable but also multifunctional. This approach not only increases the utility and value of the product but also aligns with the principles of minimalism and sustainability by reducing the need for multiple products. For example, we designed a container that held paperclips or candy that also serves as a plant pot once it's no longer being used to hold things, embodying the cycle of use and reuse.

3. A Product That Exemplifies MoodConnect's Mission

Perhaps the most important lesson was the need to create a product that truly exemplifies MoodConnect's mission of creating healthier workspaces. Every aspect of the product, from the materials used to the design, needed to reflect our commitment to wellness and sustainability. This meant choosing materials that were not only eco-friendly but also conducive to a healthy and productive workspace. Our collaboration led to the creation of products that not only minimize environmental impact but also promote mental and physical well-being in the office.

A Testament to Collaboration and Innovation

The products developed through our partnership with UC Berkeley are a testament to what can be achieved when innovation meets sustainability. They are not just products; they are a message — a statement about the importance of creating workspaces that prioritize the well-being of the planet and the people who inhabit it.

As we move forward, the lessons we learned in marketing and product development will continue to guide us. They have shown us the importance of investing in quality, the innovation possible with dual-use products, and the necessity of aligning every product with our core mission.

Thank you to the students and faculty at UC Berkeley for their partnership in this endeavor. Together, we have taken a significant step towards redefining what it means to create sustainable and wellness-oriented workspaces. This collaboration has not only resulted in the creation of innovative products but has also solidified a shared vision for a healthier, more sustainable future.

At MoodConnect, we remain committed to this vision, inspired by the lessons we've learned and the partnership we've cherished. We look forward to continuing this journey, creating products that not only benefit our immediate environment but also contribute to a larger movement towards sustainability and wellness in workspaces around the world.

Together, we are setting a new standard for what it means to work well and live well.
